Bench vs Wave in 2026: Done-for-You Bookkeeping or Free Software You Run Yourself?
This is not really a software comparison, it is a decision about who does the work. Bench assigns human bookkeepers who categorize your transactions and deliver finished monthly statements, with published plans in the few-hundred-dollars-a-month range and the lowest advertised rates requiring annual billing. Wave is software you operate yourself, free at the Starter tier and about $16 a month for Pro, which is where automatic bank imports and reconciliation now live.

Pick Bench if
Pick Bench if bookkeeping is the task you will never actually do, your business is straightforward and cash basis, and paying several hundred a month to have it handled and reviewed by a person is cheaper than the risk of falling behind. Go in with two questions answered first: Bench keeps books on its own proprietary platform rather than QuickBooks, so ask what leaving looks like, and note that it briefly shut down in December 2024 before being acquired by Employer.com, which left a trail of support and continuity complaints.
Price: ~$249+/mo (as of 2026)
Pick Wave if
Pick Wave if your transaction volume is low, you are willing to spend an hour or two a month categorizing, and the budget for bookkeeping is close to zero. For a solo consultant or side business, Wave plus a tax preparer once a year is the sensible shape, and the money saved over a year of Bench is substantial.
Price: Free core; ~$16/mo Pro add-ons (as of 2026)
The bottom line
Bench buys you time and a human safety net, Wave buys you software and hands you the work, and the gap between them is roughly a hundred to one on price, so the real question is what an hour of your month is worth against a few hundred dollars. If you go with Bench, weigh the portability issue seriously, because rebuilding books in QuickBooks or Xero later is a real project. If you are not sure you need either yet and someone has simply asked you for a balance sheet, a P&L, or a personal financial statement, our free generator produces those documents in the browser without signing up for anything.
