How to Make a Balance Sheet (Small Business Guide + Template)

A balance sheet is a photo of one moment: what you own, what you owe, and what's left over. Here's how to build one that a lender takes seriously.

Assets: what you own

Current assets convert to cash within a year — bank balances, receivables, inventory. Fixed assets are the long-lived gear — equipment, vehicles, property — minus accumulated depreciation. List them at realistic values, not wishes.

Liabilities and equity: who has claims

Current liabilities are due within a year (payables, cards, taxes); long-term is the rest (loans, mortgages). Equity = what the owners truly hold: contributions plus retained earnings minus draws.

The check that finds every error

Assets must equal Liabilities + Equity — to the cent. If it doesn't balance, you've missed a loan, double-counted cash, or forgotten retained earnings. The generator's live totals make the gap visible instantly.
